The prophet Isaiah gave us a glimpse of what the Messiah would be when He eventually came. He gave us some “titles” for Him. One of those titles is “Prince of Peace” which I want to talk about. What does that mean? Simply stated, it means Jesus is the author of peace. In a world ravaged by war we need peace. The only way to have lasting peace is that the author or “prince” of peace reign in our hearts and lives. At Jesus’ birth He brought peace. Never was there a time when the hour was more propitious for the coming of Christ than our day. The angels declared “peace on earth” when they announced the Savior’s birth. Jesus not only brought peace, but He taught peace. In John 16:33 He said, “These things I have spoken to you that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” And in John 14:27 He said, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” What a thrill to know that Jesus brought peace! Not only that, but Jesus bought peace by His death on the cross. Colossians 1:20 says, “…Having made peace through the blood of His cross…” We were alienated from Holy God but Jesus established an honorable peace when He slew the enmity which prevented peace and alienated us from God. His mighty work of redemption bought peace! The question is, are you still at war or have you received by faith the peace Christ offers? Not only is He the author of peace, but He is the arbitrator of peace. Colossians 3:15 says, “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…” Rienecker in his Greek Linguistic Keys interprets this as “umpire” or “to decide between.” So, wherever Christ is welcomed and honored, peace rules! This is true in my personal life, my professional life, my church life and every area I consider. Jesus negotiates peace in my heart and therefore my life is dominated by peace when I allow Him to rule as Lord. Then, one day He will authenticate peace when He comes to set up the Millennial Age of Peace as discussed in Revelation 13, 2 Thessalonians 2 and Daniel 7 & 8. Christ’s Kingdom will be established on earth for a thousand years. Then the Eternal Age of Peace will be established as discussed in Revelation 20. Look what the believer has to look forward to! And all because of the Child born in Bethlehem – this “prince of peace!” I trust you will be strengthened and encouraged by these thoughts as you prepare for Christmas day with all its celebrations and joyous times with family and friends! |
